  Objectives

 

Well,  do you feel comfortable making your recommendations yet?  I didn’t think so!  There are obviously some basic things you need to understand before you can make an appropriate recommendation, especially when you consider that your recommendations are likely to be influenced by the patients’ gender.

 

First, you’ll need to learn something about the basic biology of bone remodeling and how it relates to osteoporosis.  Next, you should learn about the shared (male/female) and sex specific risk factors and developmental characteristics of osteoporosis. Finally, you’ll need to learn about the sex and/or gender differences in screening indications for osteoporosis.

 

Are you ready to learn?  Great!  You’ll first need to visit with Dr. Filmore in the Center for Bone Biology. She is the Director of Bone Biology Research here at the Laura Bush Institute.

   • Describe basic biology of bone remodeling

   • Define osteoporosis

   • Recognize shared (male/female) and sex specific risk factors for the development of osteoporosis

   • Recognize sex and gender differences in the development of osteoporosis

   • Identify the sex and/or gender differences in screening indications for osteoporosis
