For such a big word, osteoporosis is really pretty simple. Osteoporosis occurs when bone breakdown--what Dr. Filmore probably referred to as resorption--occurs faster than bone building. When this happens, bones become weak, fragile, and are more likely to break.
The pictures on the SMART Board give you a good idea of the difference between a normal bone and a bone afflicted with osteoporosis. Notice how the osteoporosis bone is much more porous and weak than the normal bone.
