Review of Hypertension
Hypertension occurs when the force (or pressure) of blood pressing against the artery walls is higher than it should be. Over time, this excessive pressure causes serious damage to the arteries and increases the risk of ASCVD.
Hypertension is often called the silent killer because outward symptoms may not occur for years. The disease can quietly and inconspicuously damage the heart, blood vessels, and other organs until the damage is precariously evident.
The specific causes of hypertension are unknown, but its development is associated with specific life characteristics and behaviors. Most common are characteristics such as old age and genetics and behaviors such as smoking and excessive salt consumption.
