  First-Line Anti-Hypertension Therapies

With over a dozen classes of anti-hypertensive medications, how do you know where to start with a particular patient? Fortunately, the guidelines have provided some assistance when initiating an antihypertensive medication.

Four classes of medications are recommended as first-line therapies for hypertension:

  • Thiazide diuretics
  • Calcium channel blockers (CCB)
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI)
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB)

Which medication(s) you choose depends on specific patient characteristics, which we will explore later. For now, I’d like you to learn some basic information about each of these classes of medication.
