IPE Day INTRODUCTION: INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION FOR QUALITY CARE: THREADING SEX AND GENDER CONCEPTS INTO A PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING MODEL In the spring of 2016, the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Sciences, along with the Office of Interprofessional Education and the Sex- and Gender-Specific Health program at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Lubbock campus, conducted a pilot program called IPE Day. The goal of IPE Day was to gather students from various Schools and put them together in interprofessional teams to diagnose and treat a female stroke patient within a problem based learning context and with a sex and gender difference emphasis. Prior to IPE Day, the interprofessional teams were given tasks to perform on a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was designed as a team building exercise so that the team members would already have some level of familiarity and connection prior to the IPE Day experience. During IPE Day, the interprofessional teams of students were guided by facilitators, who were limited in the information they could provide the students so that the team would have to rely on each other’s knowledge to correctly diagnose the patient and to create an effective treatment plan. In addition to the medical considerations for diagnosing and treating the patient, another question had to be considered: is sex and/or gender a significant consideration in this case? Prior to and after IPE Day, the students were required to take a pre/post-test to assess their existing/gained knowledge and to gauge their satisfaction of the IPE Day experience. All students who completed the IPE Day program received a certificate of completion and a citation for their CV. The 2016 IPE Day pilot program was a rousing success and is scheduled to become an annual event at the TTUHSC! This page is designed as a resource for other institutions that might want to replicate a program like this. In that regard, in addition to the other IPE Day resources linked here, we have provided Request for Proposal information. Scavenger hunt plan, clues, and Team photos As a team building exercise, and to get the teams to begin thinking about the significance of sex and gender in treatment decisions, we asked each interprofessional team to participate in a scavenger hunt. They were given sex and gender specific health clues with instructions for them to take a team photo at a designated clue destination. Prizes were awarded to the teams that completed the most clues in the shortest time, as well as for the most innovative/entertaining team photo. Not all teams participated in the scavenger hunt, but for those who did, it proved an effective preparation for their collaboration on IPE Day. A link to the clues for the scavenger hunt is below.

Facilitator's guide This section brings us to the PBL (Problem Based Learning) aspect of this case. Problem based learning is learner directed learning that is facilitated in a small group environment using a vehicle termed “the ill-defined problem.” The skills of the facilitator in this context are not as content expert, but as a coach who can observe, evaluate, and redirect the group behaviors and interactions.

road Map This guide provides instruction for adapting clinical cases to an inter-professional group of learners. While cases can be written from scratch for this purpose, this guide provides suggestions for adapting existing program-specific cases to an interprofessional audience. Further, this guide provides suggestions for threading sex and/or gender concepts into the case presentation, the instructor’s facilitation of case discussion, or the rubrics for assessing the group’s case performance.

Certificate of Participation After IPE Day concluded, we provided each student with a certificate to verify their participation. The certificate also identifies the learning objectives that the students met during their participation in IPE day, and we provided the appropriate citation for their CV.
