Pharmacological treatment recommendations for MVD are essentially the same as those for ASCVD. So effective statin therapy is just as important in treating MVD as it is in treating ASCVD.
Another important treatment goal for MVD pertains to improving patient quality of life. The MVD symptom that most significantly affects a patient’s quality of life is microvascular angina—pain associated with reduced blood flow to the heart.
Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are one medication that can relieve angina pain, particularly in the African American population. You may recall learning about CCBs as a hypertension medication during our last visit together.
Not only do CCBs reduce blood pressure, but they also relax and dilate blood vessels, increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart's while also reducing the heart's workload.
The video to your right tells the story of one woman’s struggle with MVD and how medications are providing some relief for her symptoms.
